the blog-a-thon continues
The Eides suggested a bean-counting technique to stave off meltdowns and tantrums in double-exceptional kids. It’s by Dr. Paul Beljan and it’s described nicely in this blog I stumbled on: http://www.leahsbookcollection.com/2008/03/discipline-for-gifted-kids-unique.html. Thanks, mama of two gifted girls! It’s described here by the author: http://giftedhomeschoolers.org/articles/beans.html
We previewed it tonight. The kids loved sorting the beans. Later, Sam was walking around the kitchen and he said, “I’m feeling stressed… I think I’ll go sort beans to calm down.” And so he did. We’ll see how it goes when the novelty wears off. Hopefully this will help with homework meltdowns.Let me know if you give this a try, and how it works. It’s not punitive, it’s sort of therapeutic, y’know? I think it’s all in the framing. It seems like it can be a gift to a sensory-overwrought kiddo. I’ll let you know if I run into one of those….

my law firm still things i’m odd because i’ll often ask for the random “weird” sorting type things when i’m trying to solve a problem. I’ll do things like update book inserts (they are binders, you must remove outdated pages and replace) or do litigation filing or things like that. I’m “too skilled” they say. I’m too skilled not to. It both keeps me grounded in what needs to be done to keep the office chugging along and allows my brain to settle and solve the problem at hand. I /would/ knit but that would be pushing it a little.
This is really interesting. I’m going to take some time to really read into it and possibly try it with B.
